How do you apply an epoxy floor coating to a concrete floor yourself?
Easy to apply in a day
Farmcoat Epoxy Floor Coating is very easy to apply yourself in a day. Here we explain how you can easily apply an epoxy floor coating to a concrete floor in your barn, tank room, feed passage or garage.
Required materials
- Clean tap water, preferably a high-pressure cleaner
- Concrete sander or concrete grinder
- Farmcoat application kit; consisting of a watering can with spray head, mixing paddle (for use on a drill), brushes, rollers, telescopic handle, tape and Farmcoat ADP Cleaner)
- Farmcoat Epoxy Floor Coating
1. Pretreatment
The preparation process is paramount for a good result. Grease, dirt
(feed residues/dung) and other contaminants should be completely removed from
the substrate. Use high pressure if necessary.
2. Sanding
Sand the surface with a concrete grinder or concrete sander. This ensures long-term adhesion. For substantially worn substrates, sanding also ensures that unevenness is smoothed out, brittle/loose pieces are removed and you end up needing less coating. So sanding also saves you money! New floated floors should also be sanded. This is because these are so smooth/sealed that the coating cannot adhere well to them. New concrete substrates that have not been floated and already have a rough surface need not be sanded (as shown in the instructional video on this page). After sanding, rinse the floor again to remove all the dust.
3. Cleaning
Apply Farmcoat ADP Cleaner diluted with water (1 part to 10) to the floor using the watering can with spray head. Brush this in and leave it on the floor for up to 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, spray the substrate clean with tap water. The ADP Cleaner is an acidic cleaner that ensures that all miniscule dirt (invisible to the eye) dissolves. In addition, the ADP Cleaner causes the pores of the concrete to open up. This makes the coating adhere even better!
4. Coating
Make sure the substrate is completely dry before coating. You can do this by letting it dry overnight or speeding up the process by using a gas burner. Tape the substrate where necessary for a good dividing line (relevant for feed passages).
Mix Farmcoat Epoxy Floor Coating before use by adding the B component (hardener) together with the A component and mixing it firmly with the supplied mixing paddle attached to a drill for 2 min. Also mix well along the edges and across the bottom of the tin.
Pour the coating onto the floor in sections within 30 minutes and spread it over the floor using a roller. Use the roller to spread out/push the thick layer forwards. Use the brush for the edges/corners. Optionally, a wiper can also be used. Note: Keep to the processing time. After the processing time, the curing process of the products starts and the products become difficult to use. Store the coating in a cool place (< 20 °C) before use. Do not leave in the sun.
5. Drying
After 12 hours of drying, you can start using the floor again.
