2-layer system in a day
Applying a coating in a pigsty yourself
Coatings play a crucial role in protecting and improving pigsties. These special finishes offer numerous benefits that not only extend the life of the sty, but also improve the health and welfare of the pigs.
Pigsties are subject to a range of challenges, from constant exposure to moisture and chemicals to the constant presence of urine and faeces on the concrete grids. However, the use of coatings in pigsties offers significant advantages. First, a good coating ensures that the surface of the sty is waterproof, preventing the penetration of moisture and the entry of bacteria and fungi. This reduces the risk of disease and infection in pigs, resulting in a healthier herd and lower veterinary costs.
In addition, coatings in pigsties offer a smooth and easy-to-clean surface. The coating forms a barrier between the concrete substrate and the pigs’ urine and faeces. This makes cleaning the sty much easier and more efficient. Moreover, the smooth finish of the coating prevents the accumulation of dirt and bacteria, improving hygiene in the sty.
Finally, coatings significantly extend the life of the pigsty. They provide a protective layer against abrasion, chemical corrosion and other forms of damage. This reduces the need for frequent repairs and maintenance, which saves the pig farmer money in the long run.
All in all, coatings in pigsties offer numerous benefits, including improved hygiene, healthier animals, better air quality and an extended service life of the pigsty. By investing in quality coatings, pig farmers can create a more efficient and sustainable environment for their animals, resulting in increased productivity and profitability.

How long does it take to apply a coating in a pigsty?
Farmcoat is a two-layer floor coating consisting of a primer and a coating. Four hours after applying the primer, the coating can be applied. So you’ll be finished coating within a day. However, keep in mind that you will need to clean the surface thoroughly the day before so that it can dry properly before you start coating. After applying the coating, it should be allowed to dry/cure for 12 hours. So keep in mind that you cannot use the feed passage for at least a day and a half.
In what colours is the coating available?
Our coatings are offered transparent or in RAL 7001 (grey) as standard. On request and from a minimum total order of 50 kilos, you can choose any RAL or NCS colour.
Does the coating have anti-slip properties?
The coating offers a rough yet smooth finish. If you need an extra anti-slip finish, or even a very coarse anti-slip surface (for cattle to walk on), we can offer this on a customised basis.
How thick is the coating to be applied?
You can apply the coating in very thick layers. Assume that you will need up to 2 kilos per square metre. For very worn substrates, it has a levelling effect.
Is it easy to apply yourself?
Farmcoat is designed so that it can be easily applied by laymen/inexperienced persons. We supply detailed instructions with every order as standard, clearly describing the steps needed to apply the coating.
