Preparing a concrete floor for coating
A high-quality floor coating does not start with applying the coating, but with the proper preparation of the substrate. Professionally preparing a concrete floor ensures optimal adhesion, prevents problems, and extends the lifespan of your floor.
Why is preparation so important?
Without proper preparation, even the best coating can fail. At first glance, concrete appears solid and even, but both new and existing concrete have a top layer that is less suitable for direct coating. New concrete has a smooth cement laitance, which hinders the adhesion of the coating. Existing concrete can be contaminated, weakened, or damaged. In addition, irregularities in the concrete, such as protruding pebbles, can diminish the final result.
Proper preparation prevents these issues and ensures a sleek and durable final result.
Our method: step by step
1. High-pressure cleaner
First, clean the concrete thoroughly using a high-pressure cleaner.
2. Sanding
Next, the concrete must be sanded using a concrete grinder. With new concrete, this is done to roughen the surface and remove the cement laitance. With existing concrete, sanding is necessary to remove weak or brittle parts and protruding pebbles. A sanded surface ensures optimal adhesion.
This can be performed using a concrete floor grinder. An alternative is using diamond grinding discs that can be mounted on an angle grinder.
On our website, we offer 125 mm and 180 mm discs. These are suitable for surfaces up to approximately 100 m². For larger areas, we recommend using a professional machine.
3. Cleaning with ADP cleaner
After sanding, the floor must be cleaned with Farmcoat ADP cleaner, diluted in a 1:10 ratio with water. Let this soak in, then rinse with clean water and squeegee the floor dry. You can use a brush to work the agent in well if necessary.
4. Drying and coating
Then, let the floor dry completely. This can be assisted by using a gas burner or a hairdryer if needed. Once the floor is thoroughly dry, the chosen coating can be applied.
